Reverse osmosis is a right method for water purification and its effectiveness

Clean drinking water is a requirement and a blessing we often take for granted. Reverse osmosis is a water purification technique used to remove ions, molecules and large particles from water by passing it through a porous membrane at high pressure. This is not a new technique, it has been in practice for decades for industrial and commercial purposes, however, it is not considered very practical for residential or domestic purposes. It is still in industries including agricultural, food and beverages, pharmaceutical and many more.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is usually used in combination with other purification techniques such as sediment or carbon filters. The reason for this is that the membranes used in reverse osmosis cannot remove impurities and other particles such as a few species of bacteria. However, the following particles can be removed fluorides, nitrates and sulphates, pesticides, chloramine detergents etc.

The choice whether to use an RO system for water purification depends on your water source which will be affected by your geographic location. If your water comes from a public facility you may not need an RO system because that water has already gone through numerous purification stages and an RO system will not be able to do much. If you live in a rural area and your water supply does not come from country lines, but it comes from a contaminated country source such as a river then an RO system could help. But before you invest in an RO system it is better to get your water tested as you may not need an RO system but a different filtration system.

The RO systems have a few pros such as they are being used by bottled water companies and remove a broad range of chemicals. However the cons include the fact that RO systems are effective if used in combination with other filters as they cannot remove organic compounds on their own.
